A City Clerk is a public official whose principal duties include keeping records or accounts for the municipality and other duties prescribed by the law.  The position is central to government transparency because the clerk is responsible for keeping and making official records and legislation accessible to city residents.  The City Clerk is the Chief Elections Officer.  The adjudication hearing program is administered by this department to process all housing, parking, and municipal codes.

The City Clerk is one of the only three-city-wide elected positions along with Mayor and Treasurer.  The Office of the City Clerk is the most visited office in Calumet City.

We provide the following services:

  • voter registration
  • administers oaths
  • collects, dockets and securely stores the city’s records
  • provides public access to legislation, laws, records and reports
  • collects all monies owed to the City

Biography

Nyota Figgs is the City Clerk of Calumet City, and Commissioner and President of Calumet Memorial Park District.  Nyota is the first African American Commissioner elected to the Park District and serves as the first elected women and African American President.  Nyota is committed to improving the Office by making it the most technologically savvy, while providing exceptional customer service.  As another service to the community while she serves as the Commissioner, which is a non-paid elected position, she has improved programming, increased resident participation and enhanced communication between residents and the Park District.

Since being elected Clerk, she has streamlined services through computerization and new technology, making the office more users friendly.  She developed a vision and mission statement for the office and established the first annual city sticker design contest.  Her goal is to provide exceptional service and by doing that she has created several programs that benefit the residents and the city of Calumet City.

Prior to serving as City Clerk, Nyota became a Probation Officer with the Cook County Adult Probation Department, attempting to make a change in her community.  During her tenure as a probation officer Nyota served in specialized weapon carrying units such as the Intensive Drug Probation Unit and Home Confinement.  She was a leader among her peers, being a weapon carrying officer on the streets of Chicago and throughout Cook County.  She conducted herself as a fair, law abiding officer with integrity to all whom she encountered. She received both her B.A. and Masters from Lewis University and a paralegal certificate from Loyola University.

Nyota, Founder and President established the Figgs Foundation Inc. a 501 c 3 to serve the community issues.  Nyota is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, the National Association of University of Women, and a graduate of the Illinois Women Institute (IWIL). She also had the honor of being a Chicago Defender Women of Excellence (2012). She is currently an Edgars Fellow Class of 2016 nominee.
