Drinking Water Information
This is intended to provide you with important information about your drinking water and the efforts made to the CALUMET CITY water system to provide safe drinking water.
We, here in Calumet City, draw 100% of our drinking water from Lake Michigan. Each year, on a monthly basis, our water is tested by State approved laboratories for a wide range of possible contaminants.
This year, as in years past, our City¹s water has met all USEPA and State drinking water health standards. Our system vigilantly safeguards its water supply.
The Calumet City Water Department is required to conduct random testing for lead and copper in the water system every three years.
Disconnection of Water Service for Non-Payment
If your water service has been disconnected due to non-payment of a water bill, full payment of the delinquent amount will be due along with a $50 connection fee .
If your water service has been disconnected due to an NSF (Non-Sufficient Funds) check, full payment will be due in cash or money order, along with a $25 Service Charge and $50 Reconnection Fee.
Water Service will not be restored after 3:00 p.m.
Final Water Meter Readings
Before a property is sold, all outstanding water bills must be paid. It is the responsibility of the Seller, or the Seller¹s representative, to order a Final Water Meter Reading at least 48 hours before the purchase of the Real Estate Transfer Stamp. To schedule a Final Reading call (708) 891-8121.
Residential and Commercial Water Applications
As a new owner or tenant you must fill out an application for water service. This is mandatory so we can provide you with quality service. There will be a security deposit required is some instances.
Water Main Breaks
Water main breaks occur throughout the year and require the water to be shut off. After the repairs are complete, the water may be slightly cloudy, but it will clear after running for a short time.
Water Leaks in Your Home
Even a leak the size of a pinhole can waste 170 gallons of water a day. A trickle may add up to 250 gallons of water a day. Typically, inside your house, the bathroom facilities constitute nearly 75% of the water used. A leaky toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons a day.
The easiest way to detect a leak is to drop a little food coloring into the tank and wait to see if it shows up in the bowl. If it does, you probably have a leak. A toilet usually leaks at the overflow pipe or at the plunger-ball. Even if you don¹t see the color in the bowl you might still have to replace the ball if you occasionally have to jiggle the toilet handle.
Hydrant Testing
The Fire Department tests hydrants from May through the summer. The purpose of this is to insure the residents¹ safety and to keep insurance costs down. Should your water appear discolored or should you notice any sedimentation, let the water run slowly until it clears.
Open Hydrants
It is both dangerous and illegal for residents to flow hydrants. A sudden drop in pressure can fracture a main or impede fire fighting efforts. If you see an open running hydrant contact the Water Department at (708) 891-8160 or Police Department at (708) 891-2500.
Protect Your Water Lines – Winter Warning
The Water Department recommends running a small trickle of water from a cold water tap somewhere in your home during the cold nights in winter. If you allow your water lines to freeze, it becomes a very expensive endeavor to thaw them out. The City of Calumet City does NOT have the ability to thaw lines for homeowners.
