Sand Ridge Nature Center

Between River Oaks Dr. & Pulaski Rd.
(708)868-0606

Sand Ridge Nature Center’s 235 acres offers trails for easy hiking. From 1/4-mile to 2 miles long, each trail passes through a number of habitats, including prairies, oak savannas and woodlands on ancient beaches and sand dunes, marshes and ponds. Come in April and May for a wonderful spring woodland wildflower display, in summer for colorful prairie wildflowers, and return in autumn for colorful colorful leaves. Spring and fall bring numerous birds that stop to rest and feed in the different habitats. Fans of dragonflies and butterflies are treated to their aerial displays on warm days. Winter finds snow highlighting the graceful shapes of trees and shrubs, the cherry calls and colors of our resident winter birds, and the tracks of more secretive animals.

Shabbona Woods provides camping facilities for groups and families. The camp and it’s facilities complement existing program activities at Sand Ridge Nature Center, and the Nature Center provides a vibrant destination for campers. Small three-season tent cabins, mulch tent pads, and group camping in an existing clearing provides a range of experiences. Interpretive signage educates visitors about the site’s natural and cultural resources. Fencing and a gate with an occupied gate house helps provide a secure environment. Some on-site development provides opportunities for nature play or low-key recreation. Connections to area resources broaden the activities available for campers.
