Calumet City Residents and Community,
During the late overnight hours of Monday, July 15, 2024, and continuing into the early hours of July 16, the City of Calumet City was hit extremely hard by an unfortunate ACT OF NATURE. Our city was only one of the many south suburban communities caught in the path of Mother Nature’s WRATH! Calumet City, South Holland, Matteson, Thornton, Homewood, Flossmoor, Country Club Hills, Markham, Dolton, Riverdale, Blue Island, Midlothian, Lansing, Lynwood, Olympia Fields, to name a few.
The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes touched down in Cicero, and at O’Hare International Airport. Our neighboring Village of Homewood was categorized as an EF-1 tornado with winds in excess of 100 mph.
The storm left us (myself and many Aldermen, Elected Officials, and Appointed Officials) without power as well. We are humans just like you, and we experienced power outages for five days just like you and many other Calumet City residents. The storm caused downed power lines and transformers; blocked streets and roadways and fell on many residents’ homes in our city.
Of ComEd’s 16,199 customers in Calumet City, 15,900 residents were impacted and lost power because of the powerful storm. Moreover, while this unfortunate act of nature left us without power and with major citywide cleanup, THANKFULLY there were no fatalities, serious injuries, nor pets harmed in Calumet City!
I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to everyone that jumped into immediate recovery action. It is because of our strong community front including our neighborly residents and businesses, the hard work and commitment from City staff including their consecutive days and countless hours of overtime – especially the departments of Calumet City Fire, Police, Public Works, Water, ESDA, and Building and Zoning (just to name a few), ComEd and their supporting contractors, that we can bounce back and continue with moving our great City forward.
A community that is engaged and working together can be a powerful force!
THANK YOU!
