Drive Smart: Reduce Your Speed for Safer Travel

Calumet City, IL — The Calumet City Police Department has announced its participation in a statewide traffic safety campaign in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies aimed at reducing speeding and improving roadway safety.

Throughout the month of July, motorists can expect increased police patrols focused on speeding and other traffic violations.

“Speeding creates unnecessary danger on our roads,” said Chief Kolosh. “Higher speeds significantly reduce a driver’s ability to safely maneuver around other vehicles, road hazards, or unexpected curves. Speeding drivers put themselves, their passengers, and everyone else on the road at tremendous risk.”

As part of the enforcement campaign, officers will increase patrols in areas with a high number of speed-related crashes. Drivers can expect heightened enforcement on:

  • Dolton Road
  • Sibley Boulevard
  • Torrence Avenue
  • River Oaks Drive
  • Burnham Avenue

“Drivers who violate the speed limit will be stopped and ticketed,” Chief Kolosh said. “These enforcement efforts are concentrated where we have experienced the most speed-related crashes. Our goal is simple: to save lives.”

The speed enforcement initiative is funded through federal traffic safety grants
