Department Overview

The Department currently has 56 career fire personnel including the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, six captains, three Lieutenants, nine Engineers, and 36 Firefighters. All members are paramedics operating under the guidance of South Cook County Emergency Medical Services System. Many members also participate in specialty rescue teams including, Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, and Dive Teams.

The Department is a member of MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) Division 24 and the Third Fire District, which consists of 20 municipalities. These departments along with others provide mutual aid to Calumet City in the event of large incidents. The Village of South Holland, Village of Dolton, and Village of Lansing Fire Departments provide automatic-aid on structure fires. The department runs approximately 9,000 calls per year out of two stations.

Mandatory Minimum Requirements

You must meet the following minimum requirements by the application deadline:

  • U.S. citizen
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be 21 years of age and under 35 years of age at the time of application, unless otherwise exempt by statute
  • No felony or misdemeanor convictions as specified in Chapter 65 ILCS 5/10-2-1-6
  • Must be an Illinois State certified paramedic at time of hire
  • Must have a current CPAT card valid within 6 months of hire date
  • Application must be submitted with all required information

  • Oral interview
  • A current CPAT card with ladder certification valid within 6 months of hire date
