DESCRIPTION:Calumet City\, IL – With St. Patrick’s Day approaching and celebrations expected throughout the week\, the Calumet City Police Department is reminding motorists to celebrate responsibly. The department is partnering with the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation for a stepped-up traffic safety campaign running March 13\, 2026 through 6 a.m. March 23\, 2026.  “St. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate\, but safety has to come first\,” said Chief Kolosh. “If your plans include drinking\, make a plan for a sober ride before you go out.”  During the campaign\, officers will be watching for drivers impaired by alcohol\, cannabis\, prescription medications\, or other drugs. Seat belt enforcement will also be increased\, especially at night\, along with strict enforcement of speeding\, distracted driving\, and other traffic violations.  Those celebrating are encouraged to plan ahead for a sober ride home. Walking or biking while impaired can also be dangerous\, so go with a sober friend. Drivers should also remain alert for impaired pedestrians.  Safety reminders: Never drive impaired — designate a sober driver or use public transportation or a ride service.If you see an impaired driver\, call 911.If a friend is about to drive impaired\, take their keys and help them get home safely.Always buckle up.The St. Patrick’s Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI” campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by IDOT.
